A nutrition specialist who suffers from Crohn's tells us about her morning routine (which includes a super hot chocolate!)

We interviewed Dana Silvestri about her morning routine and got some really good ideas! Dana is a Holistic Nutrition Specialist, Recipe Developer & Founder of Wellness With Dana.

Having a morning routine helps me start my day off on the right foot. It sets the mood for my day, allows me to envision the day ahead with a clear mind and gives me a sense of accomplishment before the work day even begins! Leading a happy life helps me live a healthy life.

You start your day with a super smoothie. Can you tell us what goes into it and why?

I do indeed! I actually start the day with a superfood hot chocolate (and proceed with my super smoothie afterwards). My hot chocolate consists of raw cacao powder, collagen, maca and a small amount of both matcha and moringa (the taste of both are covered by the cacao, so its a great way to sneak in some extra superfoods!) 

I start each day with my superfood hot chocolate because I'm not quite ready for a meal yet when I wake up. I prefer to have an energizing, warm, cozy drink to start the day instead. Having Crohn's disease can often mean that you are not able to eat a lot of high fibre foods, such as raw vegetables. Seeing as raw vegetables are loaded with all kinds of beneficial nutrients, I supplement by having a superfood hot chocolate instead. I try to get as many nutrients as I can, while also being mindful of what my digestive system can tolerate.

Each one of the superfoods used has an extensive list of benefits, so this is a short and sweet summary of why I start my day with chocolate! ;)

 Do you have any practical tips for what to include and avoid for breakfast?

My practical tip is to start your day with a breakfast that will properly fuel you for the day. There is no one-size-fits-all plan, so if superfoods are what get you going, then superfoods it is! If you like to start your day with a filling breakfast that makes you feel content, fulfilled and energized, then that is what you should do! 

It's all about what works for you. 

If I did give one tip on what to avoid for breakfast, it would be refined sugar. Refined sugar causes you to feel sluggish, compromises your immune system, and crashes your energy levels, so why start your day with a food that will cause you to feel like your running on an empty battery? Fuel yourself properly, in a way that works for YOU! 

Do you have any other tips we should all include in our morning routines? For example, drinking a glass of hot water as soon as we wake up.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and wellness, but it never hurts to start your day with a big glass of water! Keep a glass beside your bed so that it's the first thing you reach for in the morning (yes, even before diving into notifications on our cell phones!). Your body has gone quite a few hours (hopefully 7-9 hours) without water, so be good to yourself and quench your thirst. Your skin, mood and stomach will all thank you. Water does so much more for us than we think!
